The New York Academy of Sciences "Science & the City" presents: The Neuroscience of Fair Play: Why We (Usually) Follow the Golden Rule Special Discount for NYC Skeptics friends and supporters! When: February 26, 2008 @ 6PM Several recent books have used theories from anthropology, psychology, and evolutionary biology to argue that our ethical or moral life evolved through natural selection. Now a distinguished neuroscientist takes that proposition a critical step further—arguing that our morality derives from basic brain signals. Donald Pfaff, head of the Laboratory of Neurobiology and Behavior at Rockefeller University, gives us the first book describing how ethics may be a hardwired function of the human brain. He solves the mystery of our universal ethical precepts, presenting a rock-solid hypothesis of why humans across time and geography have such similar notions of good and bad, right and wrong. Reception and book signing to follow. For more information or to purchase tickets at the discounted price, please view the NYAS flyer. Please note, this is not an NYC Skeptics fundraising event.

Due to the overwhelming success of Drinking Skeptically, we will be moving to a larger venue - The Village Pourhouse. The Pourhouse has many advantages over our prior home, including more space with multiple backrooms available, as well as full food service. DS will continue to take place on the last Wednesday of every month, but the festivities will now start at 7PM, an hour earlier than before (of course, this should not discourage anyone from joining us later in the evening). The first date at our new location will be FEBRUARY 27, 2008. We will be meeting in the RED LIGHT room of the Pourhouse. The Village Pourhouse is located at 64 Third Avenue (at 11th Street) in the East Village in New York City (click here for map). Please contact us if you have any questions about this change. We hope to see everyone there! Scientifically proven to be a good time! Drinking skeptically is an informal event designed to promote fellowship and networking among skeptics, critical-thinkers, and like-minded individuals. Drinking Skeptically provides an opportunity for skeptics to talk, share ideas (and yes, drink) in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. We discuss the issues of the day and whatever else is on our minds. But most of all, we have fun while promoting skepticism, science, and rationality. Don't drink? Don't let that stop you from joining us! Some of the world's most famous skeptics are teetotallers and we are happy to have you! Visiting New York from out of town? Stop on by! Skeptics are a friendly bunch and there's always room for one more...

Last week Mark Roberts gave attendees of Rebecca Watson's public lecture an impromptu tour of Manhattan's Lower East Side. It is an understatement to say that everyone was awed by Mark's encyclopedic knowledge of New York City history. This Thursday, February 28th at 1PM, Mark will be filmed for a 9/11 conspiracy program airing on the BBC. The BBC crew would like to show Mark leading a tour of Ground Zero, which Mark is offering exclusively to New York City Skeptics supporters. Anyone interested should e-mail Mark at nyctours@gmail.com and let him know that you will be attending the tour. The tour will last about an hour and begin at 1PM. Participants should meet Mark at the information area just behind the PATH train entrance at Church and Fulton.
